Donny is extremely weak since his Baclofen Pump was put in. It’s been two months since his surgery. His upper body and legs are weak.  We expected the legs, not the upper body. Has anyone come across this? If so what did you find out what caused it. The day before Surgery he went to the Gym and was able to arm curl 45 pounds. Yesterday he could only do 15 pounds. His pump is set  continuous  . Dose is low 71.8.

What is the benifit of having Baclofen pump? My daughter has Baclofen every 8 hour and seems to be doing fine? What is the sign that I should look for if she ever need the pump?

Donny's doctor is removing one of his medication to see if that's what causing his weakness. It's been 1 week. Seeing a slight differnce. He also his starting to go to the gym 5 days a week to build up strenght. It just takes time and patient.

I have no information about any pump,

however , the weakness is from something that commonly
happens in nursing homes and in some hospitals.

Every day that a person does not exercise, if they just sit still
or lie still and have no exercize at all,
their body begins to lose muscle.

As he is not moving he keeps losing his muscle
and that is obvious to you as you say he is getting wearker a
and weaker

Even the weakest person usually has physical therapy
while institutionalized at hospitals or at nursing homes.

Ask your doctors and nurses why he is getting weak.
Demand , politiely, answers and mabye you might get some.
Sorry I could not be more helpful.

(I am not a medical professional, doctoror nurse).

I just read up on the pump you mention and right there on the net,
it states the side effects of the pump.

WEAKNESS is a side effect of the pump.

so that is probably a reason why the patient is getting weaker.

I had read that also. Called his Doctor. We went all the way back since the surgery to see what changes were made. I emailed him all of Donny's Medication he had started after he received the pump.
They had put him on four new medication. We removed Xanax he was taking. He was still weak but alittle my energy. Two weeks later the Doctor took him off Buspar. He can total tell the diffrence and we can see it. His anxiety start getting high where it was interfering with his therapy.
They put him back on Xanax a low dose. It has help his anxiety. I think it was the Buspar that was causing the weakness. It was a good call on the Doctor.
Donny also goe's to the gym three a days a week doing weight machines, To help srenghten his legs. He should be doing five days a week. He is starting slowley get his strenght back. It's been 2 1/2 month's since his Baclofen Pump Surgery.
He has had his pump adjusted 4 times since the Surgery.

Stacy - I'm unfamiliar with the Baclofen Pump, but there is a website which may provide you with more answers than what you already have: http://www.medpedia.com. I hope this helps, and give Donny my best.

My daughter had a baclofen pump put in Jan 09. It helped her leg some but it still has spasticity. She also takes baclofen pills 10 mg 3 times a day. I think it makes you weaker she seems heavier. But it is hard to tell with her. She can't walk and has a hard time controlling her motor skills with her  right hand. Very strong in that arm. We call it the hand of mass destruction. She is also on Zanaflex. They are both muscle relaxers. She is so tense most of the time. I don't think she will come off any of her medications any time soon. Everyday is different with her. But I have heard good things about the bacolfen pump. And she did start talking more. Like saying her own sentences better concentration.

Two weeks after Donny got his Pump put in.His Doctor took him off of oral Bacoflen and Zanaflex. Around two weeks later he said he didn't feel as drug and not in a fog. The last two months they have been increase his pump every two weeks. They say it's real important for him to work out his legs daily because if he doesn't his legs will get stiff. He had his Pump was put in June 2009. At T8 for his legs. We still don't have it at the right dosage. They say it could take over a year. They say alot of therapy to make it work.

Has anyone noticed any excessive sweating in conjunction with the pump?  I don't have one (pump) but was asked that question by someone who does.
